Snowdon Summit Blog :: Hafod Eryri gets a Roof

Installation of the final roof section on the main part of Hafod Eryri was completed ahead of schedule early this afternoon. This was despite being unable to fit any roofing for three days last week owing to high wind speeds: 22mph is the highest wind speed in which the crane is allowed to operate. The roof was expected to take two weeks to get in to place but took only five days. Thirty one sections of the Kalzip roofing system were fitted.

Sterling Building have installed the Kalzip roofing.

The guttering still needs to be added and there is lots of work bolting the sections together to do. Stone slabs will also cover the roof to ensure it is sympathetic with the landscape. While the roof has been going on, digging out for the service-wing foundation units has continued.

and I am looking forward to seeing for my self when I walk up (with my son Llwyd) to the top from Pen Y Pass Youth Hostel on PYG track - Monday 13 Aug.

This is a vast improvement on the previous building; many congratulations to both designers and contractors on such a sensitive project and awkward location.
But the effect will, should be, to attract even more visitors to Snowdon summit. Even now the railway lacks adequate capacity. That willl now get worse and the railway cannot be expanded. I suggest a link in the other direction, with the new Welsh Highland Railway, probably at Rydd-Ddu, using a cable car would be the answer. In Lucerne on Pilatus they have both rack railway and cable car, also from opposite sides of the mountain and it works splendidly.
